You hit the nerve here. “Big Yellow Taxi” still works because it smiles while delivering the indictment. That little bounce in the melody is the trick. It lets the truth walk in before the ego locks the door.

We really did pave paradise, charge for parking, then act shocked when the garden stopped singing.

I had to let this settle a bit before I could comment. Our grandparents had this beautiful home built in the 1890s out west. We loved that home. When my grandmother died, the home was sold to the county and it was replaced by a parking lot for the county courthouse. When I went back to visit there wasn't a person I talked to that didn't remember that house. That 40 years ago. Thanks for the cherished memory.

Very exciting times!! Growing up in Chicagoland, I was 13 and remember when Senator Nelson from WI founded Earth Day in 1969 and a year later, Joni Mitchell's song, Big Yellow Taxi came out.

Both events continuously remind us that we need to respect Earth and stop taking and plundering land, wildlife, environment, etc for "progress" without giving back not only for our generations but also for future generations.

Fifty-seven years later, it seems as if some people are still ignorant of this "cause"...

Let’s hope we can preserve it for future generations. Current policy seems to want to destroy it at an alarming pace.

That 2023 concert was amazing. The real person from Joni's wonderful song "Carey" (Cary Raditz) attended the concert! I clearly remember the first Earth Day. I was in 11th grade and the whole school celebrated.

I was a junior at the University of Kansas in 1970. We really had no idea what to do on that first Earth Day. I remember the spring weather was beautiful and we enjoyed being outside with everyone else. I think there were some groups that we listened to before wandering off to another group. It had the feeling of a celebration of earth.

And thanks for the video and the song. I never really thought about why she wrote that song. It makes so much more sense now. I'll think of this iconic video whenever I hear it. What a special moment.

Oh my gosh, this was just what I needed today. And, a perfect reminder of what we’ve lost as far as environment protections and, more importantly, a perfect motivator to go forward.
