Dan, thanks for sharing your heartfelt post. I’d like to offer a respectful reply.

I understand why people are worried about CBS’s new leadership, but it might be a bit early to assume the worst. Bari Weiss definitely stirs strong opinions, but she’s also known for challenging both sides and encouraging more open debate. If that’s paired with real journalistic rigor, it could actually help CBS reconnect with viewers who’ve grown skeptical of mainstream outlets.

It’s worth remembering that CBS, like every major network, has had its share of missteps. In 2019, for example, 60 Minutes edited a Trump interview in a way his team disputed, and later coverage around Trump and Russia was criticized for leaning too heavily on early narratives that didn’t fully hold up. That doesn’t mean CBS acted in bad faith—it just shows how even respected outlets can miss the mark or appear biased.

At its core, journalism shouldn’t slant truth to the right or left—it should report what’s true, wherever the facts lead. And when the press gets something wrong or reports in a way that benefits one side unfairly, it should be quick to correct and own the mistake. That’s how credibility is built—not by perfection, but by honesty and accountability.

The real question for CBS now is whether its new leadership will live up to those principles of fairness, transparency, and integrity. And for all of us, it’s important to discuss these changes respectfully and try to understand why others feel the way they do. In the end, the journalism itself will speak for them. Let’s see how they do before writing CBS off.

have you talked to your colleagues at 60 Minutes? Barri Weiss "Demanding that the 60 minute piece on Migrants sent to a hell hole prison OUTSIDE the US needed to get a "comment from the Resident Extremist Stephen Miller before she would let it be aired!

When you worked for 60 Minutes, did a CBS Opinion writer come up to the 60 Minutes Executive producer and tell him to interview "trash"?

Your CBS News, the flagship newscast of the Tiffany Network, has been desecrated. I hate that the network news will now become Fox News. Propaganda news for the masses. I cannot believe that I have to rely on Al Jazeera, BBC News, and CBC News, to get the real story. Like Don Lemon said yesterday, "when one door close, a million other doors open. In someone's basement, there will be future journalists starting a new News network."

Wow. If you boil down all of your comments you are saying that it is absolutely terrifying that CBS may have to change from only broadcasting liberal and anti- Trump news to broadcasting what is really happening in the world without pushing liberal or conservative views.

Arthur Fishman's avatar

What is happening, in the case of BS news chief Barri Weiss, is neither liberal or conservative.

It is a sloppy way of journalism.

before 60 minutes and CBS had investigative journalism, that took the governments statements and did not see that these were unsubstantiated. It would be like CBS reported that "Donald Trump is a moron". if they reported that, and based their reporting on my word, it would not be journalism. I have no specific ability to say if a person is a moron. I might think so, but the CBS network, prior to Ms. Weiss, would find experts who could either back my statement or determine that this would not be newsworthy.

In the 1960's and 70's, America sent 100's of thousands of men to fight in support of the South Vietnamese government. news organizations, like CBS, used to use these statements to be a reason to fight in South Vietnam. CBS and others, sent reporters to South Vietnam and went out to where the soldiers were fighting and they discovered the Pentagon Papers which Ellsworth copied and sent to News Organizations. Americans learned that the true reason for fighting was not what the government had told the news. Since then the News organizations have looked for 2 sources and other evidence. This was not political!

Under the Trump 47 administration, he wants to control the News and make sure it is favorable to him.

Therefor, CBS under Barri Weiss is not telling what is happening, without bias, it is schilling Propaganda and that must be protested and demand that its news have ajournalist at the helm, that does not report to the Ellisons!

The way to respond is simply "turn it off" no viewers, no advertisers, no money, and we all understand that with today's reality no money no power.

Either that or the people who care about News should leave CBS. Without 60 minutes and The Late Show how many advertisers will stay?

Someone said this is the Victor Orben way of destroying a proud country.

This nightmare just keeps getting worse. Not only are we living in a fascism authoritarian country but we’re rapidly losing the rope to pull ourselves from the descent.

The left wanted forced vax...forced papers to be allowed into stores and restaurants, used secret courts to spy on political adversaries, demanded that conservatives be banned from social media..control the media, big business, the arts and education...they love authoritarian policies...and are the actual fascists when they aren't outright communists

Reminder: the people who want to confiscate your weapons are ALWAYS the totalitarians.

Will CBS be signing Hegseth’s conditions for reporting at the Pentagon?

What an embarrassing meander through the other people’s smear campaigns.

The Free Press is not right wing. Bari Weiss is not right wing. She IS a journalist and covered one of the most important news stories of the 21st century while mainstream outlets downplayed and distorted it.

CBS edited out the most newsworthy part of an interview with a presidential candidate for purely partisan reasons. Then they distorted another interview. They should have been sued and lost the suit when they were. Not permitting them to edit interviews will make them MORE credible - how is that right wing?

If experience running a newsroom includes doctoring interviews for the DNC and presenting forged documents to the public maybe we need a bit of inexperience from someone who still does the legwork to name her sources and provide background and context in her work.

What a shameful regurgitation of partisan cud.

Dan, It’s so predictable that you, a far left person, accuse the current owners of the CBS network of what your liberal friends who have run the network for years have done. Denouncing and degrading anything related to conservative narative, suppressing such commentary and contributing to the propagnda like pablum they have fed audiences for decades. Simply avoiding reporting on stories that would conflict with their narrative of choice, or editing out verbage of interviews that would accomplish the same. It’s so clear you’re just singing to your choir of “useful idiots“. Thing is, the guard is changing due to the fact that an enlightened public has expressed it is over the legacy news nonsense.

Actually they are also "editing" 60 minutes now as well. It makes me sad that we will get nothing but "fluff" only pure BS kind of like Fox News. I read yesterday that Ms Weiss is gay which kind of surprised me that they would hire her (maybe they didn't know?) I guess if she voted for Trump at least once (she voted for others on the other side as well in the past) they consider her loyal to the "cause." But it galls me to death to see this kind of crap happening and it galls me even further that someone at the top decided to get rid of PBS and NPR because they were too "woke." I hate the word and I believe it's over used in our modern language. But I have been watching PBS and listening to NPR for at least 60 of my 70+ yrs and I am angered that they would take wonderful and informative programming "off the air" stations that actually had educational shows on them that reached many that couldn't get cable or satellite stations. I'm hoping a miracle happens for them and someone with deep pockets saves at least some of the stations ours is going to be gone in 2026. It makes me very, very sad.

P J Johnston's avatar

I read about her just this weekend in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She is from Pittsburgh, she is gay and has both liberal and conservative ideas. I have also read that she is a stickler for details and supports the right at present (not far right) I'm sorry I touched a nerve! With respect to PBS and NPR I believe they will survive in their own right and some larger more profitable markets will save the other smaller ones on the chopping block!

Arthur Fishman's avatar

To the above writers who think that Barri Weiss is a moderate to right leaning journalist, why?

Exactly what journalism has she investigated and what did she show as to the way the story she was writing about? Did she do investigative journalism? OR DID SHE DO fluff that made autocrats willing to trust her?

My understanding is that her "Free Press" was a Propaganda piece for the reactionaries!

You mention the 60 minutes piece with kamala Harris. Did you also note that another candidate REFUSED to be interviewed? Is good journalism, the ability to rebuke a liar?

Mr. Trump has never said a truthful thing and maybe that was why he refused togo on 60 Minutes!!!

Would you be willing to ask CBS and the Ellison family to air a documentary, like Erik Severeid used to do on how Immigrants, who are escaping terrible conditions are willing to travel with their children thousands of miles, and come to a place where they do not speak the language or know its customs AND have to work for low wages, if their lucky....or they can work for DONALD TRUMP, who did not pay his Polish workers and called the ICE to deport them. He is nothing better than a Plantation Owner who believed the racist lies.

Now he is trying to undue all of the progress that minorities have made in the past 74 years!

P J Johnston's avatar

Arthur I agree with you totally! And everything you said here is correct this woman doesn't have the experience and yes I believe her Free Press was exactly what you say it is and what it was meant to achieve. The new owners did feel she was "safe" and would purge and cover up what she considered "bad" for our now administration. Most major network news stations didn't used to be so constricted or willing to tell lies to get ahead. Even though she is gay she is willing to take chances to get ahead and impress without thinking about Truth in the news.

Thank you for your comment. I am over 80 and get the N Y Times delivered every Sunday. I have been reading it for a long time, and when I moved to California, it was hard to get at the local News stand. So I have it delivered every week. The person who delivers it said that fewer people were reading newspapers and was grateful that I and others still have the paper delivered.

Ms Weiss worked at the NY Times and was disruptive and subsequently was fired. Now she works at another place where journalism thrived and her job seems to be to Propagandize or tilt the journalism away from the facts.

as to her sexuality, Peter Thiel, who was a partner with Elon Musk, is also a gay person and he mentors J D Vance! Personally, one of my friends is a gay republican, whose father was the only Republican senator who opposed the Vietnam war. Sexuality, doesn't automaticly determine political party.

I have had friends who worked for 60 minutes and who are very conservative.

For Fun, I gave one of my conservative friends, a calendar of the best thoughts of Barak Obama.

Have a merry and Happy Christmas

Lets make 2026 a great New year

Thank you Arthur again I think we both feel the same way about publications. They are not supposed to be biased, but it depends on who the head editor is. She used to work in Pittsburgh as well I read an article about her in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I get it when I can on Sundays only but there was an article about her in it. My parents were Republicans, I'm a democrat and I agree it doesn't matter what party you are on I still believe in truth and a little bit of sense in being an editor. (transparency is also a good thing too).
