As you know, I am partial to country music. So in thinking about celebrating mothers today, I was drawn to the Judds, the superstar mother-daughter duo of Naomi and Wynonna Judd.
One of their most famous ballads, “Love Can Build a Bridge,” couldn’t be a more appropriate song or a better reason to smile this Mother’s Day.
Naomi wrote the song in 1990. Soon after, she was diagnosed with hepatitis C, which sidelined her music career. The song, she said, is about the importance of standing together, and it was seen as a loving goodbye to her fans on the road. She had to stop touring because of her illness.
In 2022 Naomi died by suicide after a long battle with mental illness. Just a few weeks prior, she and her daughter sang together for the very last time at the Country Music Awards — a poetic and prescient performance of “Love Can Build a Bridge.”
All the lyrics are beautiful, but one is a needed reminder to us all right now:
When we stand together
It’s our finest hour
We can do anything, anything
Keep believin’ in the power
Yes, keep believing, and to all those with loving memories of their mothers, to my wife, Jean, and my daughter, Robin, Happy Mother’s Day!
By the way, Wynonna puts on a heckuva show. She’s touring this summer, and if she’s in your neck of the woods, check it out. Also, I’d like to note a wonderful conversation we had a few years back for AXS-TV’s “The Big Interview.”
