At least one of President Biden's potential nominees for the empty SC seat will bring an almost Earth-shattering presence to the bench: not only may she be African-American, she well may not have the Harvard-Yale-Princeton-elite education pedigree of fellow justices. Imagine Biden's audacity to believe a non-Ivy League African-American woman is capable of complex legal thought! Oh, the horror; think of the children! The Supreme Court has not been a representation of America for hundreds of years. It wasn't until my lifetime that the bench saw its first African-American, and a dozen years later its first woman. The GOP and its lapdog media take every opportunity to ridicule Democratic presidents. They took Barack Obama to the woodshed for wearing a tan suit, taking his wife on a vacation and, heaven forbid, ordering "spicy or Dijon mustard, whatever you have," on his burger. Tomorrow they will hammer Biden for eating Rice Krispies, using Colgate toothpaste, wearing Jockey underwear (insert ANYTHING here; the result is the same). They drew and quartered him over an ice cream cone. Of course they will slam him for ANYONE he nominates for the SC justice position. They just do so without reason, law or fairness. They do so with a hypocrisy unimaginable from elected leaders. We are not to find a more childish and obstructive group on the planet.

I worry about American competitiveness in the current climate of elitism in education. There are literally billions of intelligent highly motived young people around the globe who want to excel at all professional endeavors. As Americans embrace more “school choice”, less affirmative action, more nepotism (legacy or money based admissions), and fewer financial supports for education we risk losing our abIlity to compete in law, medicine, engineering, sciences, and all other endeavors requiring advanced skills. We are rapidly moving toward a society where the wealthy have access to opportunities and the entry points to the middle class are closed off based on your family’s income level. We are wasting critical talent that we desperately need to be competitive.
