Thank you for this lovely, always eloquent post, and the notes of hopefulness from readers. As a Canadian I often hesitate to comment. But what happens in our neighbours home- to our friends across the border - can have a serious impact on our lives in Canada. Certainly an autocrat like the former president, who thinks only in terms of winning or losing, posed a serious threat to our sovereignty. Trade deals Structured for win win annoyed him, and I had moments of fear he might decide to solve it with military threats. His attempted coup of January proved that to be a credible fear. America has about 365 million people, Canada around 36 million. Our friendly neighbour status is important to both countries, and should that ever be threatened Both countries would suffer enormous consequences. We grieved with you on September 11 2001; most Canadians recognized the tyrant when he was elected in 2016- and were horrified. We shared your celebration when he was defeated in November 2020, and again we shared your shock and outrage on January 6 2021. It’s difficult to watch your great nation suffer this destructive division from the other side of the rope. We share your concerns, your fears, and your hopes. Thank you for keeping a steady hand on the tiller, and helping so many to keep their eyes on the horizon of truth.

On January 6, I was much less worried about that mob taking over the US government, than I was about the people already inside the building. I’m talking about republican politicians who were so casually throwing around the idea of subverting a legitimate Presidential election and appointing their leader as leader of the country. I was glad to see Biden finally put a spotlight on this side of it and I wish more democrats and journalists would do the same. This is the bigger threat. It’s even scarier to think that there are millions in this country (including the military) who seem to be okay with it. How in the world did a person like Donald Trump come to be held in such a status that so many are willing to throw away democracy for him?
