thank you, Dan Rather and Team, for an excellent commentary on public education and the Trump and Project 2025 attacks that will harm all of society in ways that may push us into a version of The Dark Ages

Dumbing down education and making it harder to get higher education is the goal. Dumber electorate= easier to promote lies.

Man, I hate this timeline. We moved to Portugal in October. I come back to the US for business every few months, you can feel an intellectual difference in the air. It's weird.

I think I know what you mean but please explain.

"Make America Great Again", like almost everything Trump says, is about as ironic as it gets. Unless they're talking about making America great for the upper 0.001%. And even then, I would argue that if 99.999% of America is poor and uneducated, it will not actually be better for anyone. America CANNOT be the superpower that it is under such circumstances.

I mean, if Trump and company want to be at the head of a country like Russia or North Korea, I don't think that will be better than being rich in a country like America.

I have to respectfully disagree on many points in the article. First, the kids taking loans, and many adults, don't even understand compound interest, it's a serious issue. If someone doesn't understand that deferring a payment doesn't stop the interest they need better math education in ALL High Schools.

Secondly, if you can't earn enough to live, how can you pay back the loans? I think part of the problem here is people have hyped up the college experience as something they are entitled to.

I went to Community College and worked my way all the way through College, I've yet to meet many people that have done this. You meet kids who don't even know what they'll major in going to $40,000 a year college because of the "prestige", it's pathetic and frankly just stupid.

I'm curious why the Government even allowed the privatization of Student loans. Why doesn't the Government oversee it. A 4% interest rate would more than cover the cost of administering the loans. Instead we have greedy Corporations Building whole Stadiums with their profits while that money could go back into the economy.

Lastly I think Education should be FREE!!! We seem to be dumbing down our electorate, why? Influencers who have literally accomplished nothing for the greater good are steering rudderless people absolutely no where. What are we doing here?

I actually couldn't make it through to the end of your article. My son just graduated in May with his undergrad degree that he had to take loans out for part of, and I teach at a college in which the actions of this administration regarding our educational system are just taking effect for the students I see every day. I feel as if I can't do anything about what's happening to these young people. I'm frustrated and angry, and I'm not sure when that's going to go away, but I do belive the beginning is getting the current administration out or at least hamstrung if we change congressional seats. That might be the first step. I want corruption to lose. For the sake of all of us, but for the sake of the younger generation that will have to live with what has happened, please vote.

Vote your conscience, vote your resolve, vote your voice. And thank you, Dan.

As appalling as the impacts on college education are, the greatest impact of this impact is a Soviet-style re-writing of history. The little bits of history, geography, literature and other social education are being crafted to eliminate - well - education. When Animal Farm, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451 among many other staples that caused us to not to blindly follow but question were struck from libraries and curriculum we saw where this is going.

There is no education. There is however indoctrination, if that's your bag.

Excellent reporting on education. I so appreciate your team's time to develop this basic frame of the education situation. I worked for many years in Adult Education and am a big big proponent of lifelong learning. I have seen first hand the positive, empowering and enriching benefits moving forward in a structured academic setting, from certification to confidence, from reaching self-perceived goals to being role models within family units... all building towards a peaceful society.

As soon as Trump claimed Democrats were destroying the country, we knew that was HIS plan.

""I love the poorly educated.” Voters with college educations are now significantly more likely to vote Democratic, while more non-college educated voters vote Republican. It’s called the diploma divide.""

This says it all. Those making decisions about education, know nothing.....and it will show in every way in the US.

Our Ontario Premier is attempting to do something similar to our provincial education system. Having individuals take over from Boards of Education, calling Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) "handouts" for taking "basketweaving" courses. This from a guy who only barely finished high school, and funded his lifestyle selling dope with his brother. THESE are the ideologues that think they know how to shape minds. HA! My donkey could do a better job! AND this is DANGEROUS!!

Elon Musk has no business in our country and making calls that affect the lives of our citizens. He’s so doped up on Ketamine that he thinks he’s got a say in how we educate our children. He shouldn’t have any influence on our education system period. Go back to South Africa! We have enough billionaires trying to run our country and trying to fleece us for every penny they can get.

“Student loans are not charity. They are loans that are paid back, with interest.”

🔻 I read awhile back that Trump once complained that his Dad only gave him ‘a MILLION’ to start up his own business!

He’s ensuring an oligarchy & propping up his fragile ego at the same time.

* I’ll bet that SMARTS is one of the reasons he’s pounding Canada — Carney is SMART!

… and cool-headed vs Trump’s Hot-headedness.
