Hello from Team Steady. We have taken over from Dan today because as you may know, he doesn’t like it when HE is the story. But something exciting is happening, and well, it is news from the news world.
This morning, “CBS News Sunday Morning” aired a profile of Dan, the first time he has been on CBS in 18 years. We thought you, the Steady community, would like to see it. The beautifully produced piece is a retrospective of his remarkable 45-year career at the network. CBS News correspondent Lee Cowan and producer Sari Aviv interviewed Dan in Austin in February.
Dan did want to add his reflection about the piece. “I had my ups and downs during my years at CBS News, but I loved every minute. I remain proud of the work we did together. I very much appreciate this unexpected ‘Sunday Morning’ piece and always hoped that my colleagues there would remember and respect the long track record of news that mattered, speaking truth to power, and holding the powerful accountable.
“But my time at CBS was done 18 years ago. It is almost quaint to look back at the problems we had back then with our American democracy and with journalism. Compared to today, these were issues we could — and mostly did — work through.
“Now I am focused on our new challenges and even greater threats. I am focused on you, the Steady community, and on having a deeper dialogue and fresh perspective about our new realities.
“I am looking ahead, not back, at age 92. Thank you for doing the work with me moving forward.”
In other exciting Dan news, “Rather,” a documentary about his life and career, will be streaming on Netflix starting Wednesday, May 1.
If you are able to, please support the team that makes pieces like this possible.
No matter how you subscribe, we thank you for reading.
You are a National Treasure, sir.
This came through just as I finished watching the profile on CBS Sunday Morning, and was texting friends to say, "May we all be so fortunate as to be as engaged and living in purpose as Mr. Rather is at 92. We are looking forward with you!
