"... we would be wise to not lose a sense of balance ..."

I totally agree.

And yet, balance is the very thing that we are lacking; as a country we can't even balance our checkbooks. After 4 years of an abusive Administration and into our third year of the pandemic, the Webb telescope is the only thing that seems to know which way is up.

Joe Manchin notwithstanding, we are essentially working with a minority controlled legislature. The sole goal of the GOP is to keep things off-balance, and in a constant state of indecision and chaos. Manchin is playing both sides in a game that will bite him in the end, voters willing. But the net result is still zero.

Amidst all of this turmoil, the first photos from Webb are inspiring, and briefly, there was a common ground; I am thankful for all of the people who made this possible. It is truly a thing of wonder.

But it's not enough to tip the scale back into equilibrium. I hate to be this cynical, but we are currently facing an existential threat to our democracy, not to mention an existential threat to our very lives. I marvel as much as everyone looking back into the distant past of our universe through the eye of the Webb telescope.

I also marvel that as we speak, here in California, our two oldest living residents, the Sequoia Redwood and the Bristlecone Pine, are dying due to climate change. Nothing is being done to address this. Do we think we are immune?

Webb is wonderful. It's a beautiful picture, it's a scientific breakthrough, it's a technical marvel ... but I live here, and my children live here, on this planet. I'd like them to have a livable planet to live on.

And Mars ain't it.

Sometimes you feel like there is little hope left. So many bad things happening at once: gun violence & death, global warming and resultant disasters... forest fire devastation, more powerful & frequent tornados and hurricanes, negative forces trying to break our nation apart and threatening our democracy, and the Russian invasion & terrorism against Ukraine to name a few. Thank you for your persistent voice, Mr. Rather. I helps to fill the voids of helplessness with hope!
