Thank you Dan! I enjoyed both renditions of “Beyond the Sea”, especially on the incomparable Ed Sullivan stage❣️ I think I’m partial to Bobby’s version, perhaps because my parents played his records often, and it brings back memories of simpler, happier, more innocent times. These days (I was born in 1953) I treasure my memories of the security of growing up in America, and wish my children and grandchildren could have them, too. Take care and steady on…
The inherent musicality of Bobby Darrin comes through in every gesture, glance, finger snap, and shuffle. And what a singer…simply the complete package. And he left us way too early!
Honestly, I loved both versions. I wish I could get to New York and see “Just in Time.” I’m smiling, but also with tears in my eyes as The Ed Sullivan Theater goes silent after decades of amazing entertainment and comedy preformed there. All because of ugly partisan politics from David Ellison who has joined Trump in his violations of the Constitution and free speech. There was an opinion piece in the NY Times recently entitled “CBS has Canceled Itself, Not Just Colbert.” Very true. It is sad, it is wrong and it needs to be corrected soon. Anyway, sorry for ruining this edition of Reason to Smile, but seeing that musical piece in The Ed Sullivan Theater prompted some commentary. I think Ed Sullivan is looking down and saying, “Shame on you CBS!”
Didn't understand it then, but Darin had decided not to let his success in rock-n-roll (our campus radio named "Splish Splash" one of the ten greatest rock-n-roll hits of all time, and i certainly agreed) let the world define him as a teen idol. So, on to the big-band style of performance. Artistic freedom, like other freedoms, requires not letting the past constrain you. Liked Groff's beautiful voice but there's a spark in Darin's version that gives it the nod from here.
The common denominator in these lovely, “Reason to smile,” posts? Music from our past, brings peace of mind, if only for the length of a song- 🎵 ☮️ 🧠 😎
Thank you, Dan! Loved everything Bobby ever sang, and was a big fan of “Hennessy” — rushed home from school everyday to watch hoping BD was in it that day! Johnathan was good, but the best part of that was when the big band kicked in! Thank you again!💙
as good as both performances were, future practitioners of the arts could be wise to read Rachel Carson’s Sea trilogy and reflect in their art the beauty of interconnectivity and responsibility to our relationships with the sea, all water, earth and sky
it is not so artful to bid adieu to any part of the natural world all of which we will always call home, unless one wants to be ejected into orbit and become a part of the gross mass of space trash
Dan Rather, you, at age 90 and you are an inspiration to me & millions of Americans who value the truth and our democratic republic.
Dan Rather, KEEP ON ROCKIN'!!!
Thank you!
Oh without a DOUBT, nothing beats Bobby Darin’s version ❤️

I don't suppose Kevin Spacey is popular with a lot of folks here. This rendition not as good as what he did in the movie, but I liked it a lot.

Wonderful article about the legendary Bobby Darin. Thank you for the clip of Darin singing "Beyond the Sea". He owns it.
Bobby Darin all the way. Just love him.

both performances
Yes, Bobby D! There is just something about Bobby Darin’s voice and his rendition of Beyond the Sea that still thrills me.
Wow they are both great but the original has a smooth cool that is just sublime….
Thanks for this!❤️
