Thank you for your true understanding and empathy. In all the years that Israel has existed, there have been opportunities for a more peaceful existence for both Israeli Jews and Palestinians in Israel and Gaza. But those that govern have refused to take advantage of those oppportunities. And so, I've been furious at both "sides" for their refusal to engage diplomatically. I'm do not forgive the Israeli government for what it has been doing to the Palestinians in Gaza, and Hamas is not a "governing" body - it has as much as said so. Hamas is a terrorist organization intent on exterminating all Israeli Jews, then Jews around the world. It is not, and has never, cared about the Palestinian people, as Hamas has always put those people in harm's way. And so, here I am - an older Jewish woman who has relatives that were exterminated by the Nazis, and some who survived to tell me about the Holocaust. And here we are, again. A militant, terrorist group has attacked Israel with the full knowledge that they are risking the lives of every person in Gaza. I do not blame those who are taking sides because I understand the urge to do so. But, neither "side" holds the high moral ground here and both "governing" bodies are leaving the corpses of innocent people in their wake. It's unconscionable. It's evil. I am bereft, not just for the Jews in Israel but for all the occupants of Israel and Gaza.

A person I know of Middle Eastern descent told me today “You must understand that this comes not from any particular religion, but from extremism. You cannot fight extremism by being more extreme. You cannot kill to redeem killing. You must be moderate.” There is a lesson for us in the US here, too. If we can reduce extremism (for example by ending gerrymandering of congressional districts) we can respond to extremism with moderation.
